GLOBAL: Xpert MTB/RIF Test Quickly Detects TB and Resistance to Rifampicin

News-Medical.net reported on a second systematic review of the Xpert® MTB/RIF TB test, which is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO commissioned this updated Cochrane Review as part of the process to update the policy on the use of the test.

Pros and cons of high-tech TB testing

A new, sophisticated diagnostic test for tuberculosis now being rolled out promises to be faster and more accurate than the old methods and much easier to use. But the first trials of the GeneXpert MTB/RIF Assay test in real-life situations have proved that while all this is true, it did not make any significant difference to treatment outcomes.

Gains in tuberculosis control at risk due to 3 million missed patients and drug resistance

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment has saved the lives of more than 22 million people, according to the WHO "Global tuberculosis report 2013" published today. The report also reveals that the number of people ill with TB fell in 2012 to 8.6 million, with global TB deaths also decreasing to 1.3 million.

London may be famed for its historic sites, double-decker buses and West End shows, but it now has a more dubious distinction: It has become the tuberculosis capital of Western Europe.In response, health officials are taking to the streets in an effort to stop the spread of the infectious lung disease, with a high-tech white van equipped with an X-ray machine that drives around London offering free check-ups.

Public Health England plans national primary care TB screening programme

Public health officials are planning a nationally co-ordinated programme of targeted TB screening in primary care, to combat rising infection rates in some urban areas of England. Experts at Public Health England (PHE) claim the best way to ‘reverse the tide’ is for GP practices to start screening for latent TB in at-risk groups, particularly immigrants from areas with a high incidence of the disease.
